LOD is a set of specifications that allows experts in the AEC business to properly document, explain, and specify BIM material. It acts as an industry standard, describing the stages of development for various BIM systems. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) introduced LOD in 2008, with five different levels defined to specify detailed levels in a BIM model. Vico Software, a building analysis software company, pioneered using LOD to link digital models to project expenses. There are six development tiers now, which we will further discuss.
What Is Level Of Development (LOD)?
The Level of Development (LOD) specification allows industry professionals to describe how an element’s geometry and content evolve. It reflects the degree to which different team members rely on information. LOD assists designers in defining inherent properties of elements in a model at various phases of development, allowing for greater clarity in depiction. It also aids designers and engineers in communicating the Model’s usability and limitations to other specialists. LOD specs seek to standardize the use of the LOD framework while also serving as an effective and collaborative communication tool.
LOD And Design Phase
Rather than being specified by design phases, the LOD language indicates design phase completion and other milestones or deliverables. This technique is due to the need for detailed design standards since previous architects set standards inside an institution. Based on project requirements, these standards may differ between organizations and even within a single firm. Building systems evolve from concept to precise description at varied rates, with different features appearing at various points. For example, after the Schematic Design process, the Model may have elements at several levels, such as LOD 200, LOD 100, LOD 300, and possibly LOD 400.
BIM Level Of Development
Each of the six degrees of development includes LOD 100, the pre-design stage, where 2D symbols and masses indicate element existence. LOD 200 and 300 provide partial definitions of elements, while LOD 350 and 400 outline their construction and real-life functions. LOD 400 outlines basic information about various elements, and LOD 500 represents real-life functions in a building. These levels are essential, and BIM implementation services in India can ensure the successful implementation of these architectural designs.
LOD 100 – Concept Design
A symbol or similar generic representation of the Model Element can be used to represent it graphically in the Model. Other Model Elements can provide information about the Model Element. Any information derived from LOD 100 elements must be used with caution.
LOD 200 – Schematic Design
Within the Model, the Model Element is graphically represented as a generic system, item, or assembly with approximate quantities, size, form, placement, and orientation. Any information produced from LOD 200 elements should be regarded as approximate.
LOD 300 – Detailed Design
Within the Model, the Model Element is graphically represented as a specific system, object, or assembly in terms of orientation, location, shape, size, and quantity. Non-graphic data can also be attached to a Model Element. The project’s origin is defined, and the element is precisely situated concerning the origin.
LOD 350 – Construction Documentation
Within the Model, the Model Element is graphically represented as a specific system, object, or assembly in terms of quantity, size, shape, placement, orientation, and interactions with other building systems. Non-graphic data can also be attached to a Model Element.
LOD 400 – Fabrication & Assembly
Within the Model, the Model Element is graphically represented as a specific system, object, or assembly, along with detailing, fabrication, assembly, and installation information. Non-graphic data can also be attached to a Model Element.
LOD 500 – As Built
LOD 500 In terms of size, form, placement, amount, and orientation, the Model Element is a field-validated representation. Non-graphic data can also be linked to Model Elements.
A good BIM outsourcing company India provides numerous advantages, such as defining model utility and reliability, reducing 2D workflows for cost savings, using accurate LOD for high-quality models, making informed decisions based on accurate quantities, assisting design managers in identifying design intricacies, defining model usability and limitations, and obtaining accurate models with quick turnaround time. Level of Development standards improves the quality, precision, and value of the entire BIM process and 3D models throughout the lifecycle of a project.
